Speech Therapy

Restore an Individual's Ability to Communicate

Speech Therapy is a rehabilitative service that restores an individual's ability to communicate basic wants and needs, as well as to eat and drink safely. A patient's ability to communicate and/or swallow are often impacted by events including stroke, brain injury, and progressive diseases including ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson's disease. Without intervention and therapy, these patients often end up with lifelong feeding tubes and a limited ability to express themselves. Diet modifications, oral-motor and swallowing exercises, instruction in compensatory strategies, referrals for swallow x-rays, and interventions to improve voice production, articulation, word finding, cognition, and memory abilities are just a few of the areas covered by speech therapy. At Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the speech-language pathologist, in conjunction with the residents and their caregivers, develops an individualized plan of care that addresses long-term and short-term goals for each patient to assist them in becoming as independent as possible and achieving their maximum potential.
